VP of Engineering
Toronto, ONHybridFull-time$170,000 – $250,000 CAD + meaningful equity (flexible)
A hands-on engineering leadership role at a venture-backed health technology company. You will lead from the codebase: making architecture calls, raising the technical bar, scaling the platform and helping launch new clinical product lines, while growing and coaching the engineering team.
About the company
An early-stage, well-funded clinical infrastructure company helping generalist providers deliver specialist-level care, live in the US and Canada.
The platform spans a patient app, a clinical decision engine, a provider portal, an employer analytics portal and in-house SDKs, serving both consumers and employer benefit programs.
A team of about 12 today, growing toward 20+, moving to a downtown Toronto office with 2–3 days a week in person.
What you'll be building
- New clinical product lines, taken through the full product development lifecycle
- A more scalable, reliable and observable platform, with clear visibility into capacity, uptime and configuration
- An engineering team and hiring process built for the next stage of growth
What you'll do
- Work directly in the codebase, leading technical direction through hands-on contribution
- Own architecture across an API-driven, SDK-heavy platform with multiple integration points
- Improve scalability, reliability and monitoring, and report clearly on system capacity and downtime
- Lead delivery of new product verticals while balancing speed with platform stability
- Keep a steady release cadence and improve engineering process without slowing the team down
- Own engineering hiring and coach engineers on their growth
- Explain technical decisions clearly to the founders and, over time, to investors
What you'll bring
- 6+ years of software engineering experience, including technical leadership
- A hands-on, lead-by-doing approach: still comfortable writing and reviewing production code
- Strong systems thinking across complex, integration-heavy products (microservices, APIs, SDKs)
- A track record of improving scalability, reliability and observability
- Practical fluency with AI and LLMs, and how they fit together at a systems level
- Experience at companies through more than one stage of growth
- Clear communicator who can work closely with commercially minded founders
- Based in the Greater Toronto Area, or able to be in the Toronto office 2–3 days a week
Nice to have
- Background in fintech, payments or other infrastructure-heavy products
- Experience in health technology, or a genuine interest in learning the clinical domain
Why engineers are interested
- A senior leadership seat with a clear path to grow into broader scope over time
- Meaningful equity at an early, well-funded stage with long runway
- Founders who are principled and deeply experienced, and a team with no turnover since the early days
- Work that rebuilds how specialist care is delivered, rather than adding video to an old system
