A hands-on senior engineering role building a Ruby on Rails healthcare platform and its integrations with EHRs and clinical systems. You will take on the most technically demanding features, set a high bar for design and code quality, and use AI coding tools like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot as part of your daily work.
About the company
A healthcare technology company whose platform connects with EHRs, provincial health systems and third-party clinical tools.
You will work in a cross-functional pod. The Pod Lead sets day-to-day priorities, and you will report to the Development Team Lead, who supports technical standards, career growth and performance.
What you'll do
- Design, build and maintain features in Ruby on Rails applications, from data model to API to user-facing functionality
- Lead technical design for complex features: weigh trade-offs, document decisions and review designs with peers
- Write thorough automated tests (RSpec), refactor and pay down technical debt
- Own the performance, security and reliability of the code you ship, including resolving production issues
- Build integrations with EHRs and third-party systems using HL7 v2, FHIR (R4) and REST APIs
- Implement SMART on FHIR launch and authorization flows (OAuth 2.0 / OpenID Connect), for both EHR launch and standalone launch
- Map, transform and validate clinical data between formats and profiles, handling edge cases and data quality issues
- Build robust integration patterns: retries, error handling, queueing, logging and observability
- Protect patient data in line with PHIPA, PIPEDA and, where applicable, HIPAA
- Use AI coding tools daily, and critically review all AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance and maintainability before it is merged
- Act as the technical voice on customer and partner calls, and coordinate testing, conformance and go-live with client and vendor teams
- Write clear technical documentation, integration specifications and runbooks
- Mentor intermediate and junior developers, give constructive code reviews and take part in technical interviews
What you'll bring
- 7+ years of professional software development, including 4+ years building production applications with Ruby on Rails
- Hands-on experience building healthcare integrations with at least two of: FHIR, SMART on FHIR, HL7 v2, or REST/JSON APIs
- Strong command of design patterns and a track record of building maintainable, well-structured systems
- Demonstrated experience using AI coding assistants (e.g. Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to produce production-quality code
- Solid experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred), background job processing and automated testing
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP), containers and CI/CD pipelines
- Strong written and verbal communication, with experience working directly with customer-facing teams or external stakeholders
- Comfortable in an agile, pod-based team, owning work from design through to production
Nice to have
- Experience integrating with major EHR platforms such as Epic, Oracle Health (Cerner) or MEDITECH
- Experience with Canadian provincial health systems
Why engineers are interested
- Work on real healthcare interoperability problems where your code moves clinical data between systems
- A team that has made AI-assisted engineering part of how it works, and wants you to help shape those practices
- Senior-level ownership: lead technical design, mentor others and be the technical voice with customers
- Fully remote anywhere in Canada
